Opening Field Day

Summer is here!!! Wow, what a gorgeous day for Opening Field Day. Chef Jen treated us to a great meal starting with this interesting appetizer! It was followed by chicken served on rice with veggies. A tasty lemon tart with fresh fruit finished the meal. All delicious! Many thanks to Tracey and helper Ann for all your hard work on Saturday!

The winners of the day were Annabel Thorpe, Tami Garrett, and Barb Pemberton.
More pictures and results to follow.

Match Play: All of our matches are ready to go. They will be posted on Tuesday, but if you'd like a sneak peek look at the tabs above for each match. The first round must be played by June 26, which sounds like a long way off, but don't leave it until the last week to get the game arranged. All the rules are posted with the matches. Please note that there has been a change in how to calculate the handicaps for the Huffman 9-Hole Match. If you are new to match play or need a refresher please read the Etiquette, Rules, and Hints of Match Play, also posted above. Ann Hall is the convenor of Match Play.

She's baaack! (And rule books.)

There are probably smarter places to build a nest but . . . . our persistent robin has returned. She obviously likes being in a busy spot - for two years in a row she has built a nest in the water cooler stand near #3 tee. Hopefully the staff will leave her nest there and we can watch the progress from eggs to baby birds.

Rule Books:

A new Rule Book has been issued in 2016 by Golf Canada, which will be good until 2020. The cost is $5.00. There are some rule changes this year, other than anchored putters.
If you would prefer a lighter read, the Easy Guide to Etiquette and Rules of Golf has illustrations and you don't need a degree in law to understand the writing. The cost is $3.00. It's ideal for learning basic rules and good for kids, too.
I have ordered a supply of each, so let me know if you would like a copy of either one.

Lost Ball and Provisional Ball

Susan hit her second shot on #1 over the creek but to the right into the long grass. She wasn't sure if she would find her ball so this was a perfect time to play a provisional ball. Susan ended up finding the ball, but it was unplayable, so she had to use the unplayable ball rule. (See Rules Tab above for more details about that rule.) Once she found her ball, the provisional ball may not be used.

What is a provisional ball and when do you play one?

You hit a provisional ball when the ball may be lost outside of a hazard. You also hit a provisional when there is a possibility that the ball may have gone out of bounds. You announce to your playing partners that it is a "provisional ball" (and it should be marked differently from the first one).

If you find the lost ball you must play that ball, even if you don't like where it is, or if it's unplayable.

If you cannot find the lost ball, then your provisional ball becomes the ball in play.

If you don't find the lost ball, and you haven't played a provisional ball, you must actually go back to where you hit your previous shot. That's why we play a provisional - it saves a lot of time. (You are not allowed to just drop a ball outside where you think it may have become lost.)

Note: you may not play a provisional if the ball is likely lost in a hazard. Once you play a ball over the hazard, that becomes the ball in play. So it's a good idea to make sure the ball really is in the hazard before you play the next shot.

Ball on the Bridge

Dale hit her ball into the long grass in the hazard on #1 and the ball came back toward her and finished on the bridge - talk about lucky!!  (We re-enacted the scene for the picture on #8).

What's the ruling? How should she proceed?
The ball is actually in the hazard - if the bridge weren't there, where would the ball be? If she were back on the cart path, not in the hazard, it would be a free lift. Here, however, she may play from where the ball is (as she is doing in the picture); or take it back with a penalty of one shot, keeping that spot between her and the flag. And this is the only time when you are allowed to ground the club in a hazard while taking your stance.
Want to know more about rules? There is a Golf Rules tab at the top of the page where several rules are shown and explained.

Teams Selected

We have a total of 48 women signed up for Team Play 2016, and lots of new members taking part.
Our "draft" was held Tuesday night with Captains Diane Arsenault (Deannes Divas), Susan Ross-Foster (Eagles Rock), Sharon Klan (Sharons Klan), and Ene Milner (Triple Threat) volunteering to do the jobs. Thanks, ladies!
The teams and schedule will be posted soon and the results each week will be on the poster as well. If you would like to check out the results yourself at home the website is www.golfscoring.net/dalewood/womens. An easier way: there is a LINK to it on the right hand side of the Blog that will take you directly there. You can see how your team has done and how your handicap is calculated (because it will be different from 1/2 your regular handicap). Once you're at the site, just click on your name and your stats will show up.

New member Anne Parks hit a unique shot on Tuesday night, while trying to go over the creek on #10. The good news was she didn't lose her Noodle ball and it was easily identifiable; the bad news was she couldn't figure out any way of hitting it.

The 3 M's and Spring at Dalewood

As was mentioned at the Opening Meeting, Ene and Noel Milner became the grandparents of triplets earlier this year. Proud parents Mike Milner and Laura Udvari-Milner, are both members as well. Probably little time for golf this summer for them!

Here are the cuties on their third month birthday:  L to R: Martin, Madeline, and Marcus

And thanks to Laura Ebbrell for submitting this great spring picture - we haven't had enough of these days! Terrific colours!

Oh Captain! My Captain! and Achievement Board

We have 48 women signed up this year for Team Play so it promises to be another fun season! With "draft night" approaching on Tuesday at 7:30, we are still looking for 3 captains. Enthusiasm and attendance are more important requirements than good golf. Your duties might include:
- sending out a reminder that "next week is a Team Play day and we need all 12 of your scores."
- checking with the scoring website to see how the team did
- occasionally sending out a congratulatory (or "we'll do better next time") email to your team.

If you have had fun the first two years, remember that 8 different women (out of about 45) have taken on the role of Captain - and thank you for that! It's going to be your turn sooner or later.

Achievement Board: Check the tab above for lots of information about recording your "personal bests".
