Be careful out there

On Tuesday afternoon, Diane Arsenault found a very small tick on her leg after walking near the fence line on #7. It resembles the one pictured below on the right and was about the size of the "C" in the word "cents" on a dime.

Three nymphs of the blacklegged tick, on a ruler and beside a dime, at different stages of feeding.

Diane did some research for us and this is what she found out:

As well, there is a weed that is growing rampantly in Eastern Ontario - Wild Parsnip. Having recently been east of Belleville, this weed is growing everywhere! It resembles Queen Anne's Lace (also known as Wild Carrot), but is yellow in colour. It causes skin damage in the form of blisters and has actually caused blindness when eyes have been exposed to the sap. Dogs can carry the sap to their human friends on their coats, too.

I have not seen any around here, but it has been found in Durham. Here is an article about from a Pickering paper about the dangers of the weed, spotting it, treating exposure, etc.

Both articles are worth reading.

Member-Guest - Aug 9

Greetings!

What a great time we had on Sunday!  Everything was perfect - the weather, the course, the game, the dinner, the prizes, the beautiful raffle baskets, and most of all, the friendship!  Golfers were all decked out in their bling and glitter.  We were certainly a dazzling group!

Congratulations to Yvonne and committee:  Ariane, Lynn and Tracey.  You couldn't have planned a more fun day for members to show off our club to their friends.  It was wonderful to see some former members come back as guests. They all commented on how much they miss Dalewood.

For those of you who were unable to play in the Member Guest consider participating next year if you can.  It's one of our best events!

A special thank you to the Jamie, Brad and Dave.  They helped to make the tournament a huge success!!

Rainbows, hawks, and other stuff

Tuesday's golf was cut short by a thunderstorm arriving around 5:30, but not long after it was followed by a rainbow (and a faint double one) captured by Lynn Attley.

Speaking of capturing, Ariane managed to get this great photo on hole #7 of a hawk capturing its dinner - a gull. Now if only we could train them to do something about the geese!

A sign up sheet will be posted this week for our annual Devil's Tournament on Tuesday, Aug 25 - 12:30 shotgun. The game will be as usual: one member from the higher handicap group will partner with one from the lower handicap group and play in a 6 better ball, 6 scramble, 6 alternate shot format. The cost will be $10, with all the money returned as prizes. Dinner selections to be announced later. (Members do not have to be part of the women's section to participate.)

I have been asked to advertise the Mixed Member-Guest on Sunday, Aug 30 - 1:00 shotgun. Flyers are posted in lower hallway. The cost for guests is $110/couple (dinner and golf); for members it's $70 (dinner). There is a $10 fee per 4-some for prizes.

Pretty in Pink

Susan Ross-Foster, Yvonne Shannon, and Bridget Smith, who happened to be playing together in the second round of the Club Championship, arrived at the club on Sunday morning dressed in matching outfits - completely unplanned. They definitely won the best dressed team award!

As we all know Team Play is on Tuesday July 28, not July 30. I'm going to blame the error on a long week!

Thanks, Linda, for organizing the apps on the balcony following the first round of Club C. They were delish!!

Upcoming Events

Now that the GAO Junior Championship is done, we are back to our "regularly scheduled programming".

Tuesday, July 28 is the last day of round-robin Team Play. Playoffs will start Aug 11. Don't let your team down!

The sign up sheet for the Bulger Trophy is on the bulletin board and will be held either Sunday, Aug 2 or Tuesday, Aug 4. It is a Chapman alternate shot. Each player drives and then hits her partner's ball and then alternate shots until the ball is holed. Get a partner and put your names on the list. If you don't have a partner sign up anyway and the games committee will find you a partner.

The Member-Guest, postponed from June will be on Sunday, Aug 9. It is going to be a "blingy" event. Yvonne and her committee have done a great job putting it all together and are hoping for great weather that day! There is still room to sign up.

Watch for details to be posted soon for the Devil's Tournament on Tuesday, Aug 25. Save the date!

Pan Am results: Andrew Yorke finished 7th, only 33 seconds behind the winner in a race that took almost 2 hours! Congratulations on a fantastic effort! Rachel Honderich won a silver medal losing to her doubles partner, Michelle Li, who took the gold in the final. She won all of her matches 2-0 up to that point. Wonderful results!

Dalewood's connections to the Pan Am Games

One grandmother will be in Toronto watching one event in the Pan Am Games with particular interest and pride. Gerry Yorke's grandson, Andrew Yorke, will be competing for Canada this Sunday morning at 8:30 in the Triathalon. Unfortunately, there will be no TV coverage. Gerry is very hopeful for a podium result!!

As well, Rachel Honderich, who is the late Jane Bulger's granddaughter, will be competing in both singles and doubles in Badminton. Her first competition is Saturday evening. For some of our long-time members, Rachel's mother is Terri Bulger, who was a junior member at Dalewood.

Best of luck to both Rachel and Andrew!

Greta Philips

The Greta Philips Trophy will be played this Sunday, July 12 or on Tuesday, July 14. This is a partner better-ball competition. You play your own ball and take your handicap strokes off for each hole. The lower score of the two partners is used on each hole for the 18 hole team total. Sign up sheet is on the bulletin board.

Club Championship will be July 25 and 25, with the skills challenge being held on Friday evening (the 24th) starting around 5pm.

Team Play will resume on July 28.

Two items have been posted on the For Sale page. Follow the link at the bottom of this email to the For Sale Page.

A match worth noting!!

Last Friday, one of our doubles match was played and went EXTRA long. It was between Diane Moffat and Lynda Rennick versus Dale Hodge and Bridget Smith. It was back and forth for 18 holes with no clear advantage being taken. It was tied after 18 and unfortunately Bridget had a prior commitment (9 holes of golf elsewhere!), so Dale soldiered on 2 against 1. Unbelievably, she took her opponents to the 9th hole. Yes, that's a 27-hole match before a winner was determined! We've had 6 extra holes several times, but I do not recall a match having to go to #9.  When did you last play 27 holes? And Diane and Dale walked all 27! Congrats to Diane and Lynda for winning, and Dale and Bridget for putting forth a battle!

Here are their three great shots into the 26th hole (#8) - no sloppy golf here!
