Tree dedication
On Wednesday, July 9, a few of Mary Buckley's friends and family gathered to celebrate the planting of the oak on #18. Fortunately her daughter MJ and her husband Jim were able to play with Ene and Noel Milner in the morning and saw the tree close up. Good memories of Mary were exchanged. It was great to see some former members, as well.

Canada Day and floating balls
The weather finally cooperated for us on a Tuesday and we were able to complete the Mary Buckley Eclectic. It only took 16 days! Thanks for your patience, Martha. Results will be posted in 16 days. ;-)
I think the two women who brought their Canadian flags in on July 1, with 6 and 5 shots to spare may have an advantage in both the Tuesday low net game and the Eclectic. Well done Annabel and Thelma! A special thank you to Sandi who decorated our third tee with red and white flowers and the Canadian flags!!
The next competition on the calendar is the Greta Philips Better Ball. Get a partner or sign up as a single. You play your own ball and the better net score on each hole is used for the team score. Play it on Sunday July 13, or Tuesday July 15. July 15 will also be a Team Play day, so you'll have to keep three scorecards that day in your group. We're getting good at that now!!
It appears that one of us (Sandi?) is playing the 8th hole with a floater. Not really - the weeds are so thick in the pond that the ball actually was suspended on the weeds. Too far to reach, but it makes a great picture (thanks Laura E.):

This and That
This first round of the Mary Buckley Eclectic will be Sunday (June 15) and Tuesday (June 17). Round 2 will be June 22 or June 24. You count your best scores on individual holes over two weeks and it is a net competition.
Team play continues on Tuesday, June 17 (postponed from June 3). Will Sandi's Swingers or the Diamonds in the Rolph remain undefeated? And will Leni's Girls on Fire or the Birdie Bunch get their first win? The box for scorecards should be on the 10th tee. Remember to keep separate cards for Team Play, the Eclectic, and our Tuesday $2 game. I know it sounds complicated, but we'll get used to it.
Our Member-Guest is scheduled for Sunday, July 6. Sign up on the bulletin board. The theme is Mardi Gras and it promises to be a fun day.
Peterborough District Better Ball is being held on Monday, July 7 at Lakeridge Links, north of Whitby. The cost is $85 per person, including golf, dinner, and prizes. Flyer and entry forms are on the bulletin board.
A little party to celebrate the Mary Buckley tree will be held on Wednesday, July 9 at 2 pm. An email with an RSVP will be coming out soon. Reserve the date if you are interested.

Matches, Team Play, and the Mary Buckley Tree
The match play draws are all posted. If you signed up to play in one (or all) of them, please check to see if you are to play in the first round. Get in touch with your opponent(s) as soon as possible to arrange a date. (Phone numbers and emails are on the Dalewood website, under Member Roster.) The first round deadline is either June 26 or June 28, depending on the match. While that sounds like a long time away, don't leave it until the last week, because we know how hectic everyone's schedule is.
A suggestion is to read the rules sheet, which is posted above the draw before you play. Be familiar with the playoff format if there is a tie. (The putting competition is the only one that is NOT match play, but total putts, and is NOT a three hole playoff.) If you don't understand the rules, be sure to ask someone. A sheet on Match Play Rules, Hints, and Etiquette is also posted on the board.
You can check out the Match Play draws on the Women's Section Blog under "Pages" on the right hand side. I will update the matches as the summer goes on.
Team Play was cancelled on Tuesday June 3rd and will be replaced by Tuesday June 17. Can Sandi's Swingers and Diamonds in the Rolph keep their streak alive or will Leni's Girls on Fire catch fire and The Birdie Bunch make lots of birdies??
Wednesday July 9 at 3 pm has been chosen as the date for the celebration for Mary Buckley tree. We are happy to report that it has survived the harsh winter and started sprouting some green leaves. An email with an RSVP will be sent out in the next 2 weeks.

Stakes, stakes, and more stakes
Now that Tyler and his staff have put out those colourful stakes all over the course, there has been some discussion about the rules applying to them. Before I begin, I want to thank Claudia for the "Rules Cheat Sheet" in the locker room. They are bright pink and are there for all to take. They are laminated, so you can put them in your bag to pull out for handy reference. I also have copies of the "Easy Guide to the Etiquette and Rules of Golf" for sale for $2.50. Pictures and illustrations throughout the book help you understand the rules and it's written in non-legal language. Regular rules books are $4.
WHITE STAKES - mostly to the left on our course (#1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 9 (both sides), 12 and 15 (by the range) - signify Out of Bounds. If you see the ball go out, you must count a penalty stroke and re-hit from the same place. If you are unsure if the ball is out of bounds, you may hit a "provisional" ball (after telling playing partners you are doing so) and play it until you get to the point where the first ball possibly went out. If the first ball is indeed out of bounds, your provisional ball becomes the ball in play. If you find that your first ball is actually in bounds, you must play it. Some specific rules about OB:
YELLOW STAKES - signify a water hazard that you must cross to get to the target (ie our creek and ponds that you must cross). When your ball goes into a hazard, you may not play a provisional ball. For example if you think it may have crossed the creek, you or your playing partners may go across to see if the ball is safe. If you choose not to do that and find it later, that found ball is no longer in play. When you hit the ball into the hazard, make note of its 'point of entry' (where it last crossed the hazard). Here are your choices of how to play from a yellow hazard:
1. You may play from the hazard as long as you do not move anything natural (leaves, branches, divots, etc) and you do not touch your club on the ground.
Or with a penalty of one shot:
2. You may drop a ball and play from the same place you just played from.
3. You may keep the 'point of entry' between you and the hole and go back as far as you want on a straight line. (Fairway may be ideal, but that line may not get you to the fairway.)
RED STAKES - signify a "lateral" hazard (for example way left on #2, the high rough to the right of #8, or the pond on the right of #10). The same rules apply as for a yellow hazard (above) but you have two additional choices of how to play:
4. You may take relief two club lengths from the point of entry, not nearer the hole.
5. If possible, you may do the same thing on the other side of the hazard, and play from there.
Unlike OB stakes, you may move hazard stakes to play a ball.
There is a question every year about the pond on #8: "I hit the ball to the far bank of the pond and it comes back into the water. Am I allowed to drop it over there?" Ask yourself, did it completely cross the water hazard? Answer: no - therefore you must use the the yellow hazard rules above.
It pays to know the rules - they are not meant to penalize you, but to keep the playing field fair for all. Sometimes you can even use them to your advantage. Please let me know if you want other rules explained on the blog.
And don't forget, Opening Field Day is Saturday and our first Team Play is next Tuesday!!
