~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I will take this spot to tell you about a newsletter I get from Jon Sherman, who happens to be the mental, strategic golf coach for MacKenzie Hughes. His newsletter is called "Practical Golf."
Today's idea on strategy is: Double (triple) bogey avoidance is more important than getting birdies, if you are trying to lower your scores.
As the chart shows, the difference between 1.1 and 6.1 doubles is far greater than the difference between 1.9 and .1 birdies.
He writes "Use this as your North Star when you get into certain situations on the course. It could be when you are short-sided or in the rough. Or when you have a decision to make in a recovery situation in the trees. Most notably, it often shows up on your approach shots, not biting off more than you can chew trying to pin hunt aggressively."
Provisional Balls and Red Stakes
A message from Sandi MacDonald:
Match Play and tournament play has begun! Thanks everyone for setting up your games.
A little rules review:
Provisional or No Provisional: That is the question!
The answer from GO (Golf Ontario):
PROVISIONAL: If you think your ball is lost OUTSIDE a penalty area (for example, into trees or long grass, not in a hazard) or your ball MIGHT be Out of Bounds, please play a provisional. If you cannot find your original ball, your provisional becomes the ball in play. If you do find your original ball, that is the ball that must be played. If you have not hit a provisional and can't find your ball, you must go back to the original place and play again. For pace of play, no one wants to make that walk backwards.
NO PROVISIONAL: If you think your ball is in a penalty area (formerly known as a hazard) …pond, creek, creek bed rough, or any area marked with red stakes, you may NOT play a provisional.
If you think it may be found/playable, you must verify BEFORE hitting another ball. You may not hit a "provisional" ball and then look for your first one.
~~~~~~~~~~~

Red vs Yellow Stakes: You may have noticed that all our penalty area stakes are now red. You still have the same options when playing from red stakes that you did from yellow. With a penalty of one stroke you may:

1. Play from the same place again.

2. Keep the point of entry into the penalty area between you and the flag and drop, as far back as you want on that line.

3. Drop within 2 club lengths from where it went in, not nearer the hole.

And, you can always try to play from a penalty area. The rules changed a few years ago to allow us to move "dead stuff" away from the ball and to ground our club.

A message about match play

From Sandi MacDonald:

As match season is now with us, here are a few reminders:

Review the bulletin board for the list of rules and hints for both singles and doubles match play…also on Golf Canada web site.

Mainly, let’s kept the game moving! Keep up with the group ahead.

In a nutshell…

~Singles: if you are having an “off” hole, with no chance of winning it, ease the pain, give it to your opponent and move on to the next hole.
~Doubles: if you are out of the hole, and your partner is playing well, stop the bleeding, pick up your ball. Let your partner finish the hole.

If your partner has putted in, and your putt means nothing, pick up your ball.

You may verify stokes taken at any point in the match. Verifying the status of the game after each hole is a good idea…as well as after the first 9.

Honours matter in match play. Hitting in correct order counts — it's not a “ready golf” game. Putting in correct order is to be followed in singles. In doubles, the player who is away may ask her partner who is closer to the hole to putt first. If she makes it and that's the best score your team can make, pick up, and give yourself a reasonable score.  Giving yourself a Nick Taylor, 72 foot one putt is not reasonable!

The giving of short putts is allowed and encouraged. Otherwise you force your opponent to mark a 6 inch putt, because she can't putt out of order. If an opponent gives you the putt, please pick it up.

Any ringers, birdies, chip-ins made during a match may be counted, in addition to your weekly games.

Scores ARE expected to be entered for handicap purposes.

The Match Play box is in the locker room on the ledge; a completed and signed scorecard should be placed there after the match.

Winners are NOT obligated to buy the post round beverages.

Any questions, please ask.

New wines and matches posted

First, a message about our new wines from Bridget, our house and social convenor:

Here are a few tasting notes and a menu from Jen.

Sauvignon Blanc

Exudes scents of summertime - breezy cut grass and lime with vivid flavours of white peach and yellow plum, crisp green apple and lime. Arresting and pure, with a grapefruit finish that adds sophistication and grip.

Blacksheep Riesling

Bursting with granny Smith apples, stony minerality, lime and a touch of peach. The palate has lovely with lemon-lime notes and that tension-packed yin-yang of sweet-tart on the fresh and lively finish.

Cabernet Franc

This savoury wine with cherry – tobacco aromas, juicy blackberry – raspberry flavours and black pepper accents has enough tannin to keep the sensory banquet lingering. A great match with BBQ, olive – rich Mediterranean foods, or savoury herb – seasoned dishes.

Merlot

There is an intriguing, perfumed note on the nose with dark cherries, black raspberries, cassis, integrated spices, and subtle earthy accents. It's rich with some tannic structure and weight on the palate followed by juicy red berries, anise, cassis, and elegant spice notes through a long, lifted finish.

Second, a message about Match Play from Sandi MacDonald, our Match Play and Handicap Convenor:

Match Play is ready to go, both on the bulletin board and on the blog. For a sneak peak, the matches are on the tabs above the post.

Please review the rules (and hints) posted concerning the respective Match Play Games. Please do your very best to adhere to the timelines - that first date will arrive quickly!

Matches will be played from the Red Tees and doubles must use 90% of handicap.

All participants are responsible for contacting each other to set up a match time. If you win the match, make an effort asap to contact the next opponent(s).

If you would like me to make up your card, please ask. Any cards I create will be left in the Pro Shop.

After the match, put in the signed card in the box on the shelf under the bulletin board in the locker room (with first and last names please). Remember to enter your scores into Golf Canada Scoring. If unsure how, please contact me.

Matches played following protocols, should not take longer than a regular round. No one wants to be responsible for backing up the course.

The numbered flags we have used in the past for the Putting Matches are no longer with us! Set up the course as usual and memory will have to suffice. If not, let me know!
