Although the weather on the weekend was terrific and made us all want to be out golfing, Mother Nature had other things in mind. The rain on Sunday night and all day Monday caused the opening of the club to be postponed. In case you thought they were being too cautious, Jamie sent me this picture from Monday afternoon. The water had actually started receding by the time this shot was taken. The good news is that no damage was done to the cart paths during the flooding and opening was to go ahead on Wednesday, for those brave enough to play in 6 degree weather. The even better news is that it didn't rain on TUESDAY!! Maybe that's an omen for rain free golf this year on OUR day.
Team Play:
The women's section is going to continue with Team Play again this season. There will be 9 dates (including 3 playoff rounds) throughout the summer. We have scheduled them to avoid any trophy play, so that the issue of keeping three cards hopefully does not arise (unless we run into rain problems again). You will still need to keep two cards in the group for 9 holes - one for the pro shop and one for the "toonie game". An explanation of score keeping will be given at draft night and posted on the Team Play board. Sign up by May 9 and draft night is May 12. The cost will be $20 again this year.

That time of year again!
President’s
Message
This has been the year of the winter
that just wouldn’t go away! Welcome back
to those of you who were fortunate enough to escape the winter perils and
congratulations to those of you who persevered our Canadian weather! As another new golf season draws near, I know
our women golfers are anxious to get back to the game and reunite with good friends.
This year promises to be another year
of great fun and fellowship, not to mention some fabulous days on our beautiful
Dalewood course. Jamie and staff are
busy ensuring that the club is picture perfect for our return. I think you’ll be in for a surprise when you
come to the club! Your 2015 executive are
also hard at work preparing for the new golf season. Your feedback from the survey and the questionnaire
sent out last fall will continue to offer us guidance over the course of the
season. Team Play is back by popular
demand and social events will continue to keep everyone busy off the course as
well. Fresh ideas and new games are
always welcome to keep our Tuesday league and tournaments vibrant. Once again, I have made it my personal mandate
to involve as many new faces as possible in volunteer roles. No need to take on an executive position or
volunteer for the entire season. Helping
out for a day, an event or even for a few minutes will be really, really
appreciated! After all, this is your
club so the greater the involvement, the stronger the women’s section will be.
The Spring General Meeting will be
held the afternoon of Saturday May 2nd. This year registration and
the President’s Reception will begin at 1:00 PM. By having the President’s Reception before
the meeting and fashion show you will have more time to socialize and trade
winter stories with your golfing friends.
You will also have time to do some shopping at the vendor displays
before the meeting as well. Soon you
will receive a phone call from one of the executive giving you details, but for
now put May 2nd on your calendar.
I wish all of you a great golf season
full of fun and many personal achievements!
Should you need anything or have suggestions, please talk to me or
another executive member. Our 2015 Dalewood Women’s Golf Schedule will be
posted on the blog so stay tuned…
Warmest regards,
Linda Isaac

Fun Fact Friday
Putting Stats
When we watch a professional golf tournament we think pro golfers never miss a putt. In fact, we are usually seeing the best golfers in that particular tournament (or Tiger Woods, no matter what he is shooting). Here are some interesting stats about how good they are (or aren't):
Distance One Putt Two Putts Three Putts (or more)
1 foot 100% 0% 0%
2 - 3 feet 95-99% .6% .1 - .2 %
7 - 8 feet 50% 49% .5%
12 feet 30% 69% .9%
20 feet 14% 84% 2%
32 feet 6% 88% 6%
40 feet 4% 86% 10%
So what does all of this mean? From 3 feet and under pros almost never miss - these guys are great!
Once they are out to 7 or 8 feet, they are still pretty good, making about the same number as they miss, but almost NEVER 3-putt from that distance. Obviously, the further they are from the hole the two-putt number goes up and the one-putt number goes down. The three-putt percentage stays pretty low, even out at 40 feet.
However, have a look at the percentages at the 32 foot distance. The pros are just as likely to three putt as they are to one putt from there. They are actually quite human.
What could we learn from this and use in our own games?

HAPPY NEW YEAR!
In 1997, Dalewood hired a new head pro, from Thornhill GC. Jamie is pictured here sitting on the railing of the deck of the old pro shop, near the first tee. Putting things in perspective Mac Carter was a few months old at the time! This picture and article were in the local paper.
Pictured below are Junior Girls Cuyler Hedley and Lillian Hopkins who broke 90 for the first time in 1997. They look soooo young! What do you think of the baggy look from the 90's?

Flashback Friday - Dec 18
Here are pictures from our Closing Field Day in 1993, of Mary Buckley winning the Senior Club Championship, the Putting Competition, AND the Brent Trophy for Greatest Reduction of Handicap. Remarkably, she was 77 years old at the time. She continued to play golf for another 15 years! No wonder many of us have said she was a great role model.
MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR ALL!!

Christmas Buffet and Heartbeats
A group from our Women's Section got together last Friday and enjoyed Chef Jen's wonderful Christmas Buffet. The ham was excellent and of course she provided her famous (or infamous) Sticky Pudding!
The following information comes from a friend and neighbour of Bridget Smith's who is running exercise classes starting in January for anyone who might be interested.

Flashback Friday - Nov 28
From 1995, we have the winners of the Woods-Shaw Trophy (alternate shot): Sandy Pegg and June Savery. I am not sure why they are dressed the way they are, but we used to have themes at our Opening and Closing Field Days.
And June must have won a "closest to the pin" competition during the field Day,
or she's buying wine for her table:
I think the photographer just wanted another picture of the outfit!
Don't forget the Christmas Buffet on Dec 12 for $16.95 ++.
Email me by Dec 5 if you want to join us.

Save the date and Flashback Friday - Nov 14
Chef Jennifer is once again putting on her fabulous Christmas Buffets on three Fridays in Dec. How about getting together on Dec 12 at 12 noon for some Christmas cheer, camaraderie, and lunch? The cost is $16.95 plus tax and gratuity. Send me an email (jbeaith@sympatico.ca) by Dec 5 to book a spot for you at the table. I will send you back an email confirming your attendance. All are welcome on 12/12 at 12!
Thanks to Joan, our Tuesday convenor, "Harry" was revived this year. He has a long and glorious history with our Section. Here are some pictures of Harry over the years:
1997 - Will Fiona Crouch keep Harry or will she pass him on to Sandy Pegg? By the way she is leaning, it looks like Sandy doesn't really want him. Harry was part of our White Elephant night and the tradition was you could keep your W.E. gift or trade it to the next person.
Harry was so popular that buttons were made for the proud adoptive mothers.
Thanks, Sandi for the photo.
How is Harry even standing up with that healthy appendage?
Tish Godfrey was the proud winner of Harry in 2004!
And our most recent "owner" of Harry is Catherine Watson.
