Craig's new son

For those of you who have been around for a few years, you will be happy to know that Craig and Elisha have had a second son, Calder Scott Mills, born Dec 16 weighing 7 lbs 7 oz. Big brother Ethan seems pretty happy with the little munchkin:

Putting Video

How often do you miss a curling putt on the low side even though you hit your target? The video link below is one of the best I have ever seen to explain where you need to aim in order to make a breaking putt. We have sometimes been told to aim at the apex (highpoint of the curve) and this video will show you why that may not be correct. It is about 5 minutes in length and really worth watching.

We have 12 people coming to the Christmas buffet lunch on Dec 11 at 12:30. If you haven't let me know please do so by email (jbeaith@sympatico.ca) before next Friday, if you wish to attend.

Merry Christmas all!!

3 club golf results

Many of you probably thought you would score a lot higher when you could only use 3 clubs, instead of your full bag. Thanks to Joan's statistics, about half of you scored pretty close to the week before. Maybe there was less thinking going on; or we learned we can hit a club less than the maximum distance; or we are better at improvising than we thought. A few had a little more trouble coping with the restriction (or maybe they had a really good game on the 15th!)

Solheim Cup and High School Golf Results

As we say it the summer, it's not the heat; it's the humidity - last Saturday it wasn't (just) the cold; it was the WIND! I don't think anyone would have played had it not been for the Solheim Cup. All 20 brave and hardy souls showed up and played all 18 holes!! (Unlike the men, who had a similar event scheduled.) That in itself is worthy of a "Congratulations"! It was a great day of fun competition and camaraderie. Thanks Sandi for organizing it. In each of the singles and doubles, the East beat the West by one point - couldn't get much closer than that. Congratulations to the East! Here are the results:
Warming up afterwards!

High School Golf:  The COSSA area (including: Belleville, Lakeshore, Peterborough, Lindsay) golf tournament was held on Tuesday at Trillium Wood in Belleville. Several Dalewood golfers had very successful days. Danielle Sawyer placed first with a score of 77; Rachel Jackson was second scoring 93 - both girls will travel to Windsor for the OFSAA (all Ontario) Championship, October 14-15. Natalie Hubbs placed fourth and also qualified for OFSAA.
On the boys' side, Nick Oosterhof (who plays at Dalewood and works in the back shop) won a 4-man playoff over Sam Meek of Kawartha GC (who won the Ontario Junior Bronze earlier this year at Dalewood), Will Richardson of Dalewood, and Sean Trapp of Lindsay. Nick and Sam will also represent COSSA at the OFSAA final.  Be sure to congratulate these young golfers when you see them!

Solheim Cup - Saturday, Oct 3 - Next weekend the US women will compete against the European women in the real Solheim Cup in Germany. We will have our own Dalewood version on Oct 3, with tee times starting around 11 am. We will have an East team and a West team, with the club being the dividing point. The format will be: front 9 - doubles better ball match; back 9 - 2 singles matches (all with handicaps). This will only work with groups of 4, (16, 20, 24, etc.) so sign up soon (first come, first served). Sept 27 will be the closing date for signing up. This will be a good opportunity to learn about match play, if you are not familiar with it. This is open to all women members of Dalewood GC. No cost - just bragging rights!!

Did you know that . . .

. . . you can figure out the trajectory your irons are supposed to have by stepping on the head and looking at the angle the shaft has? As you can see below, Sandi, in the foreground, is stepping on a sand wedge and Barb, behind, is using a 6 iron.
So when would this bit of trivia be useful? If you need to hit over or under a tree or bush, it would help to know how high or low the ball should start out.

Inspiration

If you are feeling down about your game sometime, watch this video. Amazing timing, wonderful position during impact with the ball, and incredible follow through. If this doesn't make you feel good about golf, nothing will!!

Be careful out there

On Tuesday afternoon, Diane Arsenault found a very small tick on her leg after walking near the fence line on #7. It resembles the one pictured below on the right and was about the size of the "C" in the word "cents" on a dime.

Three nymphs of the blacklegged tick, on a ruler and beside a dime, at different stages of feeding.

Diane did some research for us and this is what she found out:

http://healthycanadians.gc.ca/healthy-living-vie-saine/environment-environnement/pesticides/ticks-tiques-eng.php

As well, there is a weed that is growing rampantly in Eastern Ontario - Wild Parsnip. Having recently been east of Belleville, this weed is growing everywhere! It resembles Queen Anne's Lace (also known as Wild Carrot), but is yellow in colour. It causes skin damage in the form of blisters and has actually caused blindness when eyes have been exposed to the sap. Dogs can carry the sap to their human friends on their coats, too.

I have not seen any around here, but it has been found in Durham. Here is an article about from a Pickering paper about the dangers of the weed, spotting it, treating exposure, etc.

 http://www.durhamregion.com/community-story/5739665-pickering-boy-11-burned-by-toxic-wild-parsnip/

Both articles are worth reading.

Member-Guest - Aug 9

Greetings!

What a great time we had on Sunday!  Everything was perfect - the weather, the course, the game, the dinner, the prizes, the beautiful raffle baskets, and most of all, the friendship!  Golfers were all decked out in their bling and glitter.  We were certainly a dazzling group!

Congratulations to Yvonne and committee:  Ariane, Lynn and Tracey.  You couldn't have planned a more fun day for members to show off our club to their friends.  It was wonderful to see some former members come back as guests. They all commented on how much they miss Dalewood.

For those of you who were unable to play in the Member Guest consider participating next year if you can.  It's one of our best events!

A special thank you to the Jamie, Brad and Dave.  They helped to make the tournament a huge success!!

Rainbows, hawks, and other stuff

Tuesday's golf was cut short by a thunderstorm arriving around 5:30, but not long after it was followed by a rainbow (and a faint double one) captured by Lynn Attley.

Speaking of capturing, Ariane managed to get this great photo on hole #7 of a hawk capturing its dinner - a gull. Now if only we could train them to do something about the geese!

A sign up sheet will be posted this week for our annual Devil's Tournament on Tuesday, Aug 25 - 12:30 shotgun. The game will be as usual: one member from the higher handicap group will partner with one from the lower handicap group and play in a 6 better ball, 6 scramble, 6 alternate shot format. The cost will be $10, with all the money returned as prizes. Dinner selections to be announced later. (Members do not have to be part of the women's section to participate.)

I have been asked to advertise the Mixed Member-Guest on Sunday, Aug 30 - 1:00 shotgun. Flyers are posted in lower hallway. The cost for guests is $110/couple (dinner and golf); for members it's $70 (dinner). There is a $10 fee per 4-some for prizes.
